390 Lytton Avenue - The Double-Wide Sidewalk [Downtown North] 1994

You can measure it yourself. The Public sidewalk is 5 feet wide and this POPOS doubles that - adding 5 feet additional feet for half of two blocks. Voila! A “Double-Wide” sidewalk that is a spacious 10 feet wide for half of two blocks.

*This POPOS features a bike rack. I am not sure how it works.

Here is a video of a sidewalk chalk activation I did in early February of 2025. It rained the next day so it was short-lived on the ground but lives on here.

What you see is what you get with this POPOS: A Double-Wide Sidewalk.

HOURS: 24x7 - open even longer than the 7-11 across the street.

WHAT’S THERE: This POPOS adds five feet more feet to the existing “public” sidewalk resulting in a 10 foot wide sidewalk for half the block on both Lytton Avenue and Waverley Street along the building. The planters now have bushes instead of smaller plants. There is a bike rack to the left of the Lytton entrance. A public artwork - an arch frames the main entrance depicting the history of the automobile, a nod to the developer of the building, the Ely family, whose family business was and is automobile dealerships. There is also a passageway from Lytton Avenue to the right of the building that leads to the City parking lot behind. It is unclear whether that is also part of the POPOS. More research required.

WHAT’S AROUND: 7-11 is directly across the street on the southeast corner of Waverley and Lytton. Ike’s Sandwiches is diagonally across on the northeast corner. Small businesses and somewhat larger ones line Lytton and Waverley nearby.

WHAT YOU CAN DO THERE: Use your imaginagion and your judegement and enjoy! The sidewalk chalk video offers some suggestions.

WHAT I HAVE DONE HERE: The first thing I did here was do some sidewalk chalk activations in the POPOS. Here is the video. I have sketched, had conversations with curious passersby. I have sketched, read a book, interviewed a former Mayor and city council member who voted on the ordinance that brought this POPOS into being. I would like to play dominos or checkers here. There is potential here. We just need to work at finding it!

WHAT YOU CAN’T DO THERE: Basically, you need to leave things tidy here. It is a workplace and whatever you do, you need to be respectful and clean up after yourselves. A “No Smoking” sign recently went up on the wall on Waverley because I understand it was becoming an issue.
